As you put on the crown of the VR headset onto your eyes, it immerses you into its own digital world. However, AR (Augmented Reality) brings realism into action. Instead of entirely changing the environment, AR modifies the way we view the real world, making it more realistic, safer and useful. There are common misconceptions about these two technologies. Though they have similarities, they are distinct in many ways. While VR replaces the real world with a fully virtual environment, AR adds digital elements, layering on top of the real world. Additionally, VR requires certain headsets to experience its artificial world while AR is more convenient and viable through smartphones, tablets and smart glasses. Recently, AR has become a transformative technology, known for enhancing real-world experiences. AR is used in healthcare, retail, education, entertainment, military and much more. The article will further dwell upon AR’s development, practical application, current challenges and future potential.
Augmented Reality involves overlaying visual, auditory or other sensory information onto the real world. In order to make AR technology work, it requires three essential components: sensors and cameras for environmental input, processing area to decipher the data and display interfaces to give the augmented reality experience. The first critical component is the input layer. It includes cameras, depth sensors, GPS, accelerometers and gyroscopes in order to identify the physical environment. Next, the processing layer analyzes the input data to understand the user’s surroundings. The processing function relies on softwares (ARkit, ARcore, OpenCV) to build and process a 3D model of the environment and simultaneously tracking the position of the person. Machine learning is able to place any object by identifying space and distance. The final component is the output layer, which divulges the augmented experience. It includes screens (smartphones, headsets), projectors and smart glasses). In order to forestall any delays or disorientation in the images, the output layer involves GPU’s to showcase rapid graphics. Along with this, audio feedback or gesture based controls might be a vital part.
Interaction with the AR can occur in two ways. Either by marker based AR or marker less AR. For marker based AR, it requires a predefined visual marker such as QR code to accurately place virtual objects in the real world. It is a simple and cost-effective method to integrate virtual objects, often used in education, marketing and gaming. Meanwhile, markerless AR has the ability to overlay 3D virtual content in the physical environment without needing markings or prior setup. These are enabled in technologies such as smartphones, tablets and headsets. These offer a greater freedom of motion and wider fields of views however can be expensive and complex to integrate. Devices such as Apple’s ARKit, Google’s ARCore and 3D Cloud’s MxT tracking are tangible to markerless AR.
AR technology complements traditional learning methods. It provides a more realistic and visual experience for children. Augmented demonstrates concepts through multimedia, computer-based simulations, animations, and statistical software. While encouraging critical thinking, AR improves student engagement and perception levels. Incorporation of AR in healthcare and medicine is advantageous for the future. AR perfects surgical accuracy, boosts patient involvement and enhances studies for medical students. Apps such as AR anatomy trainers allow students to visually observe, anatomically dissect and thoroughly study the human body in an immersive way. It plays a substantial role in clinical practices as well such as improving visibility in surgeries, gaining access to remote medical training and providing patient knowledge through interactive AR experience. AR can lead to advancements and improved care. Lastly, Augmented Reality is rapidly revolutionizing the retail industry by interactive shopping experiences. AR is the bridge to enrich relations between consumers and brands. 66% of the consumers are interested in AR for help while making purchases. Interactive experiences such as virtual try-ons and object placement significantly increase customer’s interest. Augmented Reality can change our perspective and make a massive difference. Because of its capabilities to add 3D objects to the real world, its advent can support versatile fields such as education, healthcare, retail, and many more! It only involves three components of input, processing and output, the rest being a magic and fascination for us!
