Forgotten Inventors of the Modern World

When we talk about transformative inventions, we still tend to think of people like Thomas Edison or Alexander Graham Bell. But there are plenty of inventors whose names aren’t well-remembered that created things that have revolutionized the way we live day-to-day. This article will be shedding light on some of these underappreciated heroes whose ideas still impact the world we live in today.

Hedy Lamarr: The Most Beautiful Face in Film Behind Wireless Technology

Hedy Lamarr is best remembered as a glamorous presence in 1940s films, but she was also a technological pioneer. She co-invented a war-time communication system called “frequency hopping” with composer George Antheil during World War II. It was intended as a system to direct torpedoes without detection by enemy forces. Overlooked at the time, the innovation paved the way for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.

Garrett Morgan: Innovator of Road Safety

The halfway mark is an invention by African-American inventor Garrett Morgan in 1923, when he patented the three-position traffic signal. His design added a warning interval between the stop and go stages and helped the growing number of automobiles share the road. Morgan’s creation is considered the precursor to today’s traffic light system.

Mary Anderson : Pioneer of the Windshield Wiper.

Mary Anderson patented the first-ever practical windshield wiper in 1903, which she designed after observing a streetcar driver struggle with visibility during a hailstorm. While her invention was initially ignored by manufacturers, her windshield wiper quickly became a standard feature in all vehicular safety.

Beulah Louise Henry — the “Lady Edison.”

Beulah Louise Henry, known as “Lady Edison,” was one of the most prolific inventors of all time, holding 49 patents and creating more than 100 different inventions. She developed everything from a bobbin-free appliance sewing machine to a vacuum ice cream freezer. Her spirit and public innovations in nearly every household appliance reveals the best tablet for adobe illustrator appliances, as well as other male-dominated areas of invention.

Karl Ferdinand Braun: Father of Modern Electronics

German physicist Karl Ferdinand Braun developed radio and television, and also invented the cathode-ray tube in 1897 which led to TV screens. Braun also developed the dual-element mercury electrical spark coils system to transmit radio signals wirelessly. Furthermore, he also shared the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics with Guglielmo Marconi for their work in wireless telegraphy.

Alice H. Parker: Home Heating Pioneer

In 1919, African American inventor Alice H. Parker patented a gas furnace design for central heating which allowed for temperature control in individual rooms. Her invention was one of the first steps towards modern central heating and brought warmth and comfort to homes efficiently.

Robert H. Goddard: Rocketry Pioneer

Robert H.Goddard is often called the father of modern rocketry, demonstrated and launched the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket in 1926. His experiments in liquid propulsion laid the foundation for space exploration and rocket propulsion today.

Conclusion

These inventors aren’t always given credit for their inventions but they changed technology and society’s behavior forever, bringing innovation into our daily lives and operations. We must honor and recognize the innovators who brought diversity of thought to society and changed our lives for the better.
